Diagonals
Diagonals bring energy, movement and tension into a photograph. Horizontals feel at rest and verticals feel upright and still, but a diagonal suggests action: something rising, falling or moving through the frame. A strong diagonal running corner to corner can carry the whole composition and gives the image a dynamic sense of direction.
Chased by his shadow
by Jeff Kelsey
The magenta line runs from the bottom left corner up towards the top right, following the line of the climb from the lower foot to the striding legs. The handrail’s shadow, the stair edges and the angled shadow of the figure on the wall all echo the same rising direction, so the picture is full of upward movement.
